On Campus

Wireless

There is 100% wireless coverage on campus. This is the primary way people connect to the campus network when on campus. Your computer will see the following wireless networks:

  • Eduroam
    • This is the primary network on Wake Forest’s campus. It uses WFU username and password to authenticate. The same network ID can be found and used on other campuses and educational locations using the same login. This will provide WFU users with speedy and secure network access globally. Please visit this page from IS on How to Connect to Eduroam.
  • WFUmydevices and WFUwireless-legacy
    • These are special use-cases that don’t apply to most faculty. If you have an older device that can’t connect to the WFUwireless, try the WFUwireless-legacy wireless network.
  • WFUguest, IQguest (Wake Downtown)
    • This is for guests who do not have WFU credentials. You do not need to use this profile typically.
    • These wireless network profiles can be used when there are network problems associated with WFUwireless.  However, you must start the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client to remain protected from Internet threats.

Wired Ethernet

Your office should have one active, ethernet port.  Some people like Ethernet because it is a dedicated resource that is much faster than a shared, wireless connection. However, you will need to acquire a USB to ethernet adapter for your particular laptop to make use of it.

There can be several ethernet ports in your office, but only one is typically active. If you need a different jack activated, it requires a Service Desk request. Check with your ITG member if you have any questions.

Note: Network jacks that are unused for an extended period of time may be deactivated by IS as a security precaution.  Contact the IS Help Desk if you need the jack reactivated (include the jack label ID in your request).

Off-Campus

Eduroam is a wireless network that is offered to students, faculty, and staff from other campuses that participate in the Eduroam program. If you visit another campus that has the Eduroam program, you can sign in there with your WFU email and password. Check out the WFU Eduroam page and a list of participating US institutions

Home networking – You’ll connect based on how you set up your home network. The setup of home networks is up to each individual professor. That is beyond the scope of this overview.

Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client (aka WFU VPN) – From the Software@WFU website: Virtual Private Network software, commonly referred to VPN, protects users on unsecure networks by encrypting data communicated over the Internet. VPN is a utility that Wake Forest uses to provide users with a secure and convenient way to access campus resources when they are away from campus. Use of VPN is recommended anytime students, faculty, or staff use an unsecure or unknown WiFi network connection or even when at home in order to link them to campus.
