As the semester ramps up, it’s easy to get caught up. But just like regular car maintenance, our computers and digital files need upkeep too! A few simple habits can save you time, frustration, and potential data loss.

Data Backups: Your Data’s Best Friend

You can never have too many backups! While WFU provides ongoing backups of files on WFU computers via CrashPlan, it’s wise to have extra protection, especially for critical data like manuscripts or unpublished articles.

  • Options:
    • External Hard Drive: A reliable option. Choose a reputable brand and store it safely.
    • Cloud Storage: Services like Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox offer convenient offsite storage accessible from anywhere.
  • Frequency: Back up critical files daily, weekly, or whenever you make significant changes. Consistency is key!
  • Remember: Your data is your responsibility.

Update Your Programs and Apps: Stay Secure and Up-to-Date

Software updates aren’t just about fixing bugs; they’re crucial for security and performance.

  • Operating System Updates: WFU notifies you about these. Install them promptly! They’re vital for system stability and security.
  • Other Apps: Most apps have a “Check for Updates” option in the menu. Use it regularly.

Reboot Your Computer: A Digital Refresh

Reboot your computer (yes, even Macs!) at least weekly. This simple step clears temporary files, frees up memory, and helps updates install correctly, improving performance and resolving minor glitches.

Clean Your Computer: Inside and Out

A clean computer is a happy computer!

  • Physical Cleaning: Dust, crumbs, and other debris can hinder airflow and cause problems. Use compressed air for vents and keyboards, and a soft damp cloth for the monitor and keyboard surface.
  • Digital Cleaning: Over time, your computer accumulates unnecessary files that can slow it down. Delete unused files and uninstall programs you no longer need. Don’t forget about Downloads. Delete those no longer needed and move the ones you do to a better storage location.
