As the semester draws to a close, it’s important to give our hardworking computers some well-deserved attention. Spending a little time on basic maintenance tasks now can keep them running smoothly and help prevent future issues and data loss.

File Folder1. File Maintenance

Begin by taking a thorough look at the files and folders you’ve accumulated during the semester/year. Organize them into relevant folders, delete duplicates, and remove unnecessary or outdated files. This includes deleting large files like unused videos, unneeded photos, and programs to free up valuable storage space and enhance system efficiency.

2. External Backup

Consider creating an additional backup of your important data, such as book chapters or grant applications. External hard drives and flash drives are now more affordable, making it feasible to invest in an external backup solution. Simply connect the drive and copy over your files, then store it safely as an extra insurance policy for your data. To better protect your backup, store the backup device in a different location from where you keep your computer. Remember, no one cares more about your data than you do!

3. Check WFU VPN

Ensure that your WFU VPN (Virtual Private Network), specifically the Cisco Secure Client, is functioning properly. The WFU VPN protects users on unsecured networks from cyber threats and grants access to campus resources while physically not on campus. Test your VPN connection to verify proper functionality and check for any necessary updates. If you need to reinstall the Cisco Secure Client, visit software.wfu.edu for instructions. Note that the Cisco Secure Client is also available for iPad/iPhone users.

4. Cloud Backup

Verify that your CrashPlan backup service is operating as expected. CrashPlan, the service contracted by WFU for continual data backups, silently runs in the background, cataloging and backing up your data to the cloud (crashplan.wfu.edu). In case of an emergency, you can easily restore lost files or your entire dataset. Detailed instructions, including a video tutorial on how to use CrashPlan, can be found at is.wfu.edu/services/crashplan.

By following these steps, you can improve the chances of continued smooth operation of your computer and safeguard your important data for the upcoming semester or academic year.
