Hiding Grades in Canvas
Professors often want to hide grades from their students while they are working on grading them. Canvas allows the professors the ability to do this and more. Whether using the “Classic”, or “New” quiz tool, professors can control the dissemination of the students’ grades until they are ready.

Hiding and Unhiding grades in “Classic Quiz”
Hiding Grades in “Classic” Quiz
- Make sure the quiz is published
- Find the grade in the grade book
- Click on the 3 button menu in the upper left of the quiz
- Choose Grade Posting Policy
- Change the policy from Automatically to Manual
***Please note that this will not hide grades or changes to grades that are already posted***
All future grades are hidden until you unhide them.
Unhiding Grades in Classic Quiz – two options
Grade Book
- Find the quiz in the grade book
- Click on the crossed-out eye
- Click Post Grades – 3 options
- Post all grades
- Post only those that are graded
- Post by sections
- Click Post
- Grades are now visible to the students.
Speed Grader
- Enter Speed Grader for the quiz
- Click on the crossed-out eye
- Click Post Grades – 3 options
- Post all grades
- Post only those that are graded
- Post by sections
- Click Post
- Grades are now visible to the students.
Hiding and Unhiding grades in “New Quiz”
Hiding Grades in New Quiz
- Make sure the quiz is published
- Find the grade in the grade book
- Click on the 3 button menu in the upper left of the quiz
- Choose Grade Posting Policy
- Change the policy from Automatically to Manual
***Please note that this will not hide grades or changes to grades that are already posted*** - Click to edit the Quiz
- Click on Settings
- Click on Restrict student result view to check it.
- This will hide the students’ results if they click on their submitted quiz
All future grades are hidden until you unhide them.
Unhiding Grades in New Quiz
Grade Book
- Find the quiz in the grade book
- Click on the three-button menu
- Choose Post Grades – 3 options
- Post all grades
- Post only those that are graded
- Post by sections
- Click Post
- Click to edit the New Quiz
- Click on Settings
- Click on Restrict student result view to uncheck it
Speed Grader
- Enter Speed Grader for the quiz
- Click on the crossed-out eye
- Click Post Grades – 3 options
- Post all grades
- Post only those that are graded
- Post by sections
- Click Post
- Click to edit the New Quiz
- Click on Settings
- Click on Restrict student result view to uncheck it
Students will now see both their grade in the gradebook and their results of their quiz.
